About this grant

San Francisco’s Kindergarten to College program is recognized as an exemplary model for children’s savings account programs in the country. Since its inception in 2011 as a two-year pilot program, Kindergarten to College has seen much success and today enters every kindergarten student in San Francisco public schools into an automatic savings account with a starting deposit of $50 and prospects of earning financial incentives. For the last two years, the project has made significant progress in strengthening policies and procedures, embedding itself within the larger spectrum of city services, improved its universalism approach and enhanced outreach, marketing, research, and strategic communications. With this grant, the City and County of San Francisco will continue strengthening its model with the following goals: 1) strengthen operations to manage greater scale complexity and innovation; 2) strengthen outreach to schools, communities, and families of students in elementary schools, while also extending reach to middle and high school students; and 3) continue to advance the cradle to career model to help provide opportunities for young people to achieve college or another post-secondary certificate on the pathway to adult success.
