About this grant

The project goal is to expand and strengthen the community foundation field in southern Africa. Over the last two years, the Southern Africa Trust has worked with community foundations in South Africa and Zimbabwe to respond to the effects of COVID-19 on communities. Support included making small grants, strengthening their capacity to raise funds from local sources and highlighting the work of community foundations in national newspapers to raise their profile and build their credibility. Over the next two years, the grantee will expand its small grants program to provide seed grants to nascent community foundations in additional countries. Additionally, the grantee will create platforms to profile the community foundations that are coming into existence and connect them to similar organizations in the region. Since its establishment in 2005, the grantee has provided funding to organizations working to reduce poverty and inequality in the region. In recent years, the Southern Africa Trust has promoted community philanthropy to uplift poor and marginalized communities.
