About this grant
The Ecology Center is a Michigan-based organization with extensive experience and a national reputation of excellence for addressing toxic chemical science, health impacts and solutions to contamination problems. The grantee will lead efforts to unite groups in Michigan and eventually throughout the Great Lakes seeking to address the contaminants per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever” chemicals because their strong chemical bonds don’t break down in nature. PFAS chemicals are used in a wide range of consumer products despite a body of science indicating that they are linked to numerous serious health effects in humans. Nearly two million Michigan residents have PFAS-contaminated drinking water. The Ecology Center will bring together groups to form the PFAS Action Network, which will share best practices, communications resources, research and organizing strength.
