About this grant
Over the past decade, China has provided sizable amounts of development finance. Many of these projects have caused negative impacts, which has led to public opposition in host countries to further Chinese investments. China’s focus on creating energy, transport and communication infrastructure linkages from Asia to Europe, the Middle East and Africa through its Belt and Road Initiative is ambitious and has the potential for either large-scale negative or positive environmental and social impacts. With this grant increase, the World Wildlife Fund will work with non-governmental organization partners to encourage other investors to hold the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Asian Development Bank accountable to strong Environmental, Social and Governance policies. Facilitating this information sharing will enhance the two banks’ capacity to promote risk management in overseas energy finance contributing to the shift away from coal to clean energy.
