About this grant

This grant will enable Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights to organize the Midwest Children’s Savings Account Consortium. For over four years, the grantee has cultivated and led the Midwest Children’s Savings Account Consortium, providing support for an active group of stakeholders in the Midwest region working to advance children’s savings account programs and policies. This has catalyzed the launch of new children’s savings account programs, supported the expansion of existing programs and created an environment ripe for the growth of children’s savings accounts in the region. When this children’s savings account project began in January 2017, 24 children’s savings account programs were covering 21 counties in the region. By the end of 2020, the number of children’s savings account programs in the region more than doubled, with 55 children’s savings account programs covering 53 counties. Over the course of two years, Heartland Alliance, along with the Indiana Youth Institute, aims to continue advancing high-quality children’s savings accounts in the region, while laying the groundwork for the planning and funding needed to advance children’s savings accounts in the region in the longer term.
