About this grant
The project goal is to leverage financing for community justice and environment defenders in mining affected communities. Past support has helped Namati to undertake a feasibility study for an independent financing structure, supported by both private sector investors and development finance institutions. In addition, the grantee engaged more than 60 private sector stakeholders on the findings of the feasibility structure. The grantee also convened a working group of more than 20 civil society stakeholders in Africa, Asia and Latin America to identify key principles and recommendations for the design of an independent fund. Additional funding will help the grantee to support the establishment of a basket fund for community support during investment. The grantee will work with key stakeholders to design a financing mechanism that can cover the range of support communities need throughout the investment life cycle in affected communities. Established in 2011, Namati works to build a global movement of grassroots legal advocates who give people the power to understand, use and shape the law.
