About this grant

Established in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance of more than 4,700 members in 175 countries. The grantee’s mission is to strengthen civil society and citizen participation throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens’ freedom of association are challenged. Recent accomplishments include the hosting of a World Assembly and International Civil Society Week in Fiji in 2017, the release of annual State of Civil Society reports and maintaining the CIVICUS Monitor—a research tool to share reliable, timely data and analysis on civic space. This grant increase will support the grantee’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic by expanding its Solidarity Fund—a funding mechanism to support members with urgent programmatic and organizational costs. CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation’s main office is in Johannesburg, South Africa.
