About this grant
The Casual Workers Advice Office was established in 2011 to give free legal advice to workers who have been dismissed or face other labor violations by their employers in South Africa. Past Mott Foundation support has helped the grantee to continue organizing precarious workers to address systemic injustices that they may face. It has won permanent employment for 15,000 workers through their justice services. During South Africa’s hard COVID-19 lockdown, it secured various victories to ensure that the largest public employment insurance pay benefits to people who might lose income because of the difficult economic situation. Continued support will assist the Casual Workers Advice Office to provide justice services to precarious workers, organize workers to address the systemic injustices that they face and strengthen its organization to support workers and its mandate.
