About this grant
The Nature Conservancy, a global conservation organization, has identified over 100,000 acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula especially worthy of permanent protection and sustainable management. These places would connect wildlife corridors and fill in key areas of protection while also offering opportunities to forge public-private partnerships that balance conservation with compatible economic development. Across all these opportunities, the Slate River property is the most urgent and rare. With this partial funding from the Mott Foundation, The Nature Conservancy will acquire the property, develop a stewardship plan and engage with a range of stakeholders to manage the property in a way that emphasizes conservation outcomes, while also supporting the local economy and recreational activities.
