About this grant
The Nature Conservancy, a leading global conservation organization, has identified an opportunity to protect over 35,000 acres at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan, while also pioneering new approaches to conservation. The project has the potential to tap unconventional sources of revenue, allow the local community to exert control over the use of its natural resources and support a sustainable economic future for the region. Foundation funds would be used during the early stages of the project to acquire a purchase option, develop a community-centered protection plan in consultation with local leaders and document the lessons learned from the project.
