About this grant
The Woodwell Climate Research Center is a premier scientific organization working globally to solve climate change and in Brazil to protect the Amazon rainforest. Partnering with Brazilian research institutions, the grantee is investigating how fire, exacerbated by human activities and a changing climate, is the greatest threat to the stability of ecosystems and social structure in the Amazon. Over the last grant period, the grantee investigated climate-fire dynamics and collected data on smoke exposure in Amazonian communities. With renewed support, the Woodwell Climate Research Center will increase understanding of the links between fire, climate and deforestation and the implications for human health and societal changes. The overall goal is to increase the resilience of forests and communities in the face of growing fire risks.
