About this grant
The goal of this project is to build better relationships between community paralegals and the formal legal fraternity in Africa. To this end, the International Commission of Jurists will continue to undertake various activities to create space for meaningful conversations between the judiciary, lawyers and community justice workers. This grant will support these engagements in southern and east Africa, with a goal to replicate the project at scale. Previous Mott Foundation support has helped the grantee to find different means of engagement between the judiciary and community justice workers. It assisted the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers in launching her first report on the prospects of legal empowerment. The International Commission of Jurists was established in 1952 with the purpose of promoting justice and human rights within the formal legal sector. Its headquarters is situated in Geneva, Switzerland.
