About this grant
The project goal is to support the development of community foundations in the Swahili coastal region of Kenya. To achieve this goal, the Aga Khan Foundation will increase awareness and interest in the community foundation concept, expand knowledge and understanding among partners and identify initiatives that have the potential to become community foundations. Additionally, the grantee will test resource and asset development initiatives, adapt the concept to the Swahili coast context and develop a long-term plan for expanding the community foundation concept in the region. The Aga Khan Foundation has worked to improve the lives of millions of people globally since 1974 by working with communities to build self-reliance. Additionally, the grantee has been active with communities on the Swahili coast of Kenya for several decades, fostering and building strong relationships with civil society, local government and private businesses. The grantee plans to build on the longstanding history, expertise and relationships to explore the potential for nurturing local community foundations on the Swahili coast.
