About this grant
Older coal-fired powerplants are being retired across the country, including in Michigan. The Environmental Law and Policy Center — a regional environmental group based in Chicago — sees an opportunity to transform these Michigan sites by reusing some of the land for parks and recreation, and some of the land and existing infrastructure for new renewable energy generation. With prior support from the Mott Foundation, the grantee worked with a private utility, community groups and other stakeholders to assess the viability of this approach at a retired coal plant site near Bay City, Michigan. An additional one year of support will allow the Environmental Law & Policy Center and its partners to complete the assessment.
