About this grant

The Access to Information Programme works to make sure that Bulgarian citizens understand their rights and have access to information as set forth in the constitution. Program objectives include monitoring access to information legislation; sustaining a national network of journalists to document cases where local authorities refuse to give information; facilitating public debate; and providing civic education relating to access to information.Multiyear funding will support activities such as monitoring the regulation of access to information and implementation of the Access to Public Information Act; encouraging public debate and demand related to access to information in order to improve transparency of governmental and public institutions; collecting reports of refused access to information and providing legal assistance as appropriate; and sharing experiences throughout Central/Easter Europe through regional meetings regarding access to information. The program was established in 1996 to promote and monitor access to information and encourage public debate about key issues in Bulgarian society.
