About this grant
This grant provides core support to the Association for Civil Society Development – SMART, a professional training and resource organization for the nonprofit sector in Croatia. The grantee’s mission is to build the capacity of nongovernmental organizations and informal citizen groups to respond to community needs. To this end, the grantee will provide targeted training to the nonprofit sector, strengthen structured cooperation between the public and nonprofit sectors, and promote volunteerism and philanthropy in local communities. In 2008-2010, the grantee provided training to over 950 representatives from nongovernmental organizations, informal associations, and local government and published three widely distributed resource materials. Through its volunteer center, the grantee maintains a database of 50 organizations and institutions that have been trained to work with more than 350 volunteers. Based in Rijeka, Croatia, the grantee is a member of several Croatia-wide nonprofit sector networks addressing volunteerism, rural development, and training.
