About this grant

The Centre for Non-Governmental Organisations, established in 1996 to promote the development of civil society in Latvia, provides training and consultancy services and technical and legal assistance to Latvian non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The center also works to enhance philanthropy in Latvia by providing technical assistance to foreign grantmaking programs and promoting a more favorable legal and financial environmental for the nonprofit sector.Multiyear funding will enable the center to promote improved legislation regulating the nonprofit sector and provide technical assistance to grantmaking programs; supply information to and about the Latvian NGO sector; and provide advanced training to NGOs focusing on quality organizational management, financial planning, public relations strategies and project management.Achievements during the past two years included offering 70 training sessions to more than 842 NGOs annually; managing two grantmaking programs on behalf of the Latvian Soros Foundation; providing technical assistance to the grantmaking programs of the European Commission in Latvia; organizing a national forum of NGOs to identify challenges to the development of the nonprofit sector; and drafting legislation to improve the working environment of Latvian NGOs.
