About this grant

CIVICUS is a nonprofit, membership alliance whose main objectives are to offer broad meeting and partnership opportunities to its international membership; support exemplary projects; promote research and dissemination of information; assist in removing the legal obstacles impeding the development of the voluntary sector; and promote a political and cultural environment that encourages giving, volunteering and citizen action.Funding will support activities that include reviewing a recent evaluation of the Civil Society Index Project, redesigning the index methodology and developing a pilot based on the evaluation’s recommendations; planning for a World Assembly in early 2004 in Africa; strengthening a Civil Society Watch program by conducting a survey on the effects of September 11 on civil society organizations around the world; and partnering with Independent Sector to survey national civil society umbrella organizations and encourage peer learning and capacity building among these groups.Recent accomplishments included increasing membership to 600 in 100 countries and improving communications with members; refining the Civil Society Index Project; implementing a Gender at Work collaborative; convening a World Assembly in Vancouver; participating on the Davos Global Issues Group; and co-convening the Civil Society Action Learning Network at Harvard University.
