About this grant

This grant will support a project to bolster the effectiveness of local organizations by providing technical assistance that will promote better clarity of goals, better program planning and implementation, and greater stability and efficiency within their organizations. The project – Building Excellence, Sustainability and Trust (BEST) Nonprofit Capacity Building – was created by the four major funders in Genesee County – United Way of Genesee County, the Ruth Mott Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the C.S. Mott Foundation. Second-year funding will enable BEST to focus on implementing the first round of capacity-building initiatives; develop an interactive grantee Web site to access information and resources; design and implement group training; refine structure, reporting protocols and administrative procedures; and document lessons learned through the assessment process. Funding includes a grant increase to support additional costs associated with a quality evaluation of the project, more intensive team consulting for some of the nonprofits and additional costs related to organizational assessments.During the first year of the project, BESTselected nine nonprofits to receive capacity-building grants totaling $338,500; established a pool of 44 vetted consultants representing a wide array of skills; and conducted several professional development sessions for both consultants and funders.
