About this grant

Currently, there is a shortage of trained professional organizers in the field of community organizing. For community organizations to function effectively and efficiently, they need professional staff to identify and facilitate training and research needs, help members stay focused and provide guidance for engagement in the public arena.Multiyear funding will support the establishment of an organizing institute to engage in systematic recruitment and training, internship, mentoring and job placement of community organizers. During the next two years, 40 organizer trainees will be hired to participate in weeklong classroom orientation sessions, followed by a 15-week, hands-on training program in the field with a Direct Action and Research Training Center (DART) affiliate. Graduates of the 15-week program will be placed in a permanent position and provided mentoring for six months. Graduates of the six-month internship will be offered positions as local organizers.DART, founded in 1982, is a training, consulting and development center that supports a network of faith-based community organizations in Florida, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
