About this grant

Traditionally, people with disabilities have not exercised their rights to elect their leaders. Despite recent efforts to increase voter registration and the enforcement of accessible voting booths, people with disabilities need encouragement to participate in the political process. They must first see that voting is an exercise of their independence and responsibility and that they can make a difference.Multiyear funding will support the facilitation of one-day institutes for each state that will provide effective training programs and leadership development for people with disabilities. Workgroups including each state’s Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities, Developmental Disabilities Councils and Independent Living Councils will be formed to identify participants. The workgroup will define specific agendas according to individual state needs and recommend leaders and politicians, with disabilities, from each state to participate.Enable America, founded in 2002, works to eliminate the significant barriers to employment facing people with disabilities and bridging the gap between these individuals and employers.
