About this grant
Since the ending of apartheid, South Africa has experienced a significant political transformation. However, a corresponding socio-economic transformation is still needed. Although the new government has started implementing policies and programs to address the needs of the poor and marginalized, and the private sector has also made a commitment to economic transformation, there is a critical need for civil society-based organizations to ensure that citizens benefit from the provisions of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.Multiyear funding will enable the Foundation for Human Rights to strengthen itself as an indigenous grantmaker; provide support for advice offices and the paralegal sector; support efforts to empower women; and address racism and inequality. The Foundation for Human Rights was established in 1995 to support civil society organizations and other institutions that contribute to the promotion and effective exercise and implementation of human rights.
