About this grant

Through the Changing the Rules of the Global Economy project, Friends of the Earth works to strengthen environmental protection policies in the negotiations and institutions that govern international finance and trade. The project address systemic changes in the international financial institutions and trade agreements leading to more effective environmental protections, as well as projects and investments that promote and enhance sustainable development.Multiyear funding will enable Friends of the Earth to pursue initiatives that include shifting investment in oil, gas and mining to renewable energy; reforming the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency; promoting reform of export credit agencies; encouraging reform of the International Monetary Fund; analyzing harmful international investment and service agreements; and advocating for increased access to environmental information.Achievements during the past two years included encouraging the World Bank to launch a multi-stakeholder review of its role in financing extractive industries; supporting the creation of a renewable energy advisory body at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; and collaborating with global partners to educate developing country negotiators at the World Trade Organization Ministerial in Cancun, Mexico.
