About this grant

Friends of the Earth – Japan is the leading environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) in Japan working to reform Japanese export credit agencies (ECAs).Multiyear funding will enable the organization to continue its work on reform of Japanese ECAs internationally and build organizational capacity. Objectives include establishing appropriate compliance mechanisms for Japanese ECAs in order to ensure the full implementation of new environmental guidelines; monitoring Japanese ECAs and overseas development assistance institutions to avoid, prevent or mitigate negative environmental and social impacts of their funding; achieving more transparency, accountability and compliance in private sector investments; educating policymakers and the public on the roles and impacts of Japanese private and public investments in development; and contributing to the international ECA reform network through the creation of an Asia-Pacific ECA monitoring network.During the past two years, the organization worked closely with the Japanese ECA on the implementation of new environmental guidelines by organizing a series of seminars to educate government officials; facilitating a working group to develop an NGO proposal for environmental guidelines; establishing an independent study group to review the new environmental guidelines; and monitoring ECA-funded projects.
