About this grant
This grant will enable the Human Rights Institute of South Africa to continue its Socio-Economic Rights and Local Government program by educating local government councilors and community representatives on socioeconomic rights. The goal of the program is to improve the delivery of social and economic rights by local municipalities to the communities they serve.Multiyear funding will expand to six new provinces, with activities that include training local councilors and ward committee members on socio-economic rights, as set out in the South Africa Constitution and Bill of Rights, and their impact on communities; raising awareness regarding the socioeconomic challenges facing particular communities; and building the capacity of local authorities to provide basic rights and social services. The institute will conduct three-day workshops in each province. To date, the institute has trained 67 councilors, and conducted training in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
