Managed by the Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the Philanthropy Panel Study collects detailed data on the giving and volunteering habits of several thousand American households over time and over generations. The study is conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research’s Panel Study of Income Dynamics, which has surveyed families since 1968 and to which a philanthropy component was added in 2001. The dataset produced by the study is a comprehensive and accurate resource for measuring giving and volunteering in the U.S. and is used extensively by philanthropy and social sector researchers. Founded in 2012, the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University is dedicated to improving philanthropy by training and empowering students and practitioners to be innovators and leaders who create positive and lasting change in the world.
