About this grant

The Intercultural Institute of Timisoara, established in 1992, supports civil society development in multicultural Romanian communities. Programs focus on minorities and interethnic relations, Roma communities, intercultural and democratic citizenship education, and cross-border cooperation. The institute brings together key players to find common solutions to human rights, education and cultural issues with respect to diversity.Multiyear funding will support objectives that include promoting intercultural, human rights and democratic citizenship education; helping grassroots Roma non-governmental organizations and disadvantaged Roma communities in western Romania to improve access to education and stimulate local development; encouraging minority rights and positive interethnic relations through participation in a national antidiscrimination network; developing intercultural research in Romania; and preparing Romanian civil society for accession to the European Union.Since 2001, the organization has grown from a local organization to a national-level organization addressing interethnic relations in Romania.
