Modern energy helps make economic development possible as well as enhancing education, access to water, and gender equality. However, just having access to modern energy does not automatically result in development impacts. Due to this, financing of small businesses and increased agricultural production using off-grid power through mini-grids is an important new focus for funders. Over the last grant period, the International Institute for Environment and Development’s research has contributed to the expansion of new and enhanced financing mechanisms for local African companies and highlighted the importance of local level energy planning. Under this renewal grant, the grantee will fully develop a demonstration project that increases locally appropriate energy services designed around community needs.
