About this grant
The Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society works to promote an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable society in Japan and throughout the world. This grant will enable the center to encourage greater integration of environmental and social considerations into the policies and practices of Japan’s development finance institutions, as well as encourage the Japanese government to support the reform of multilateral development banks.Multiyear funding will support efforts to strengthen institutional and legal mechanisms of multilateral development banks (MDBs) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to improve accountability, ensure social and environmental considerations, and protect the rights and choices of communities most affected by development projects; minimize socially and environmentally negative impacts caused by development projects funded by MDBs and JBIC; increase the role of civil society in the reform of MDBs and JBIC through dialogues with key decisionmakers; and build relationships with international non-governmental organizations and local groups to improve their collective leverage in reform efforts.
