About this grant
The Karoo region is often described as one of the most forgotten and underdeveloped areas in South Africa. With a population of approximately 60,000 people and an unemployment rate of about 50 percent, the distance between advice offices in this area can be more than 100 kilometers.Multiyear funding will support efforts to launch a paralegal training and management course with existing community advice offices in the region and offer human rights training to the broader community. Specific activities will include providing legal assistance through available attorneys to the paralegals in the Karoo region; enabling staff to visit other organizations to learn how to best provide training and support to paralegals and advice offices; employing three fieldworkers to support more outreach work for paralegals; providing training to board members; developing training materials; and conducting an assessment of the program. The Karoo Centre for Human Rights, established in 1998, supports approximately 27 rural advice offices in and around the Karoo region by providing training for paralegals.
