About this grant

In 1994, the Land Stewardship Initiative was established as a way to unite the environmental community in promoting land-use policy reform at the state level. Through its efforts and those of allied organizations, policymakers, stakeholder groups and citizens have been made aware of the negative environmental, economic, social and fiscal consequences of current growth patterns. They also have identified a variety of public policy reforms with the potential to significantly improve land-use patterns in the state.Multiyear funding will support goals that include developing state-level leadership on land-use issues; engaging a broad and diverse collection of civic organizations and residents in advocating for land-use reform; enhancing the ability of local governments to cooperatively control unplanned growth and the economic, environmental and social costs of urban sprawl; and working to protect communities from poor transportation planning.
