About this grant

The Michigan Public Policy Initiative promotes participation in public policy among the state’s nonprofits by educating policymakers and the media on issues impacting the field; advocating for the nonprofit community; engaging nonprofits in advocacy; and encouraging research on the sector.Multiyear funding will support objectives that include continuing educational forums such as Issues in Brief; implementing Public Policy Regional Councils across the state to serve as links to the association; creating the Michigan Nonprofit Agenda 2002 for political candidates; publishing the second edition of the "Michigan Public Policy Handbook: A Lobbying Guide for 501 (c)(3) Nonprofits"; marketing and disseminating the seventh edition of "Michigan in Brief"; and addressing the need for accessible information among practitioners and researchers.During the past year, accomplishments included hosting six sessions of Issues in Brief; disseminating public policy e-mail updates; publishing two parts of a series summarizing relevant research into nonacademic language for dissemination to nonprofit practitioners; holding 10 regional trainings for nonprofit boards and staff on lobbying rules and regulations; and sponsoring Nonprofit Day 2001: From Grassroots to Government, a one-day conference focused on the financial, political and social issues impacting nonprofits.
