About this grant

Afterschool programs serve more minority students and are far more likely to serve high-poverty students than the average school. With the emphasis of the recently authorized 21st Century Community Learning Centers program on expanding academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low-performing schools, the need for programs that focus on the needs of minority students, including those with limited English proficiency, will increase.Funding will provide both traditional and new afterschool practitioners with skills and knowledge about working with limited English proficiency students and how to implement culturally responsive programs that reinforce academic achievement. Two technical assistance packages will be developed to assist afterschool grantees. The first will focus on implementing culturally responsive strategies; the second will focus on incorporating services for students with limited English proficiency.The National Association for Bilingual Education is a national membership organization dedicated to addressing issues of language and culture relative to students in elementary through high school.
