About this grant

This grant will enable the Sierra Club Foundation to continue efforts to raise awareness and engage the public, media and policymakers about the impacts of trade agreements on the environment and state and local decisionmaking authority in the U.S. The Responsible Trade Program coordinates state-level activities to build grassroots support for environmentally sustainable trade policies.Multiyear funding will support activities that include informing the public through education and outreach efforts; encouraging press coverage of trade impacts on issues of local concern; recruiting and organizing volunteers; organizing meetings, training sessions and briefings with local elected officials; and working with other key non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Americas to strengthen international efforts to influence regional trade agreements.Recent activities included developing and distributing public education materials; hiring a trade organizer to educate state-level leaders and members; expanding the program’s grassroots network; and participating in NGO activities related to the Free Trade Area of the Americas Ministerial in September 2003.
