About this grant

Jasper County, South Carolina, is a very poor, rural community made up of mostly African-American residents. The county suffers from severe structural unemployment since the only readily available employment source is seasonal farm labor.Funding will support a summer camp designed to build an entrepreneurial culture in the area and aid young people to participate in the emerging arts and crafts tourism market as artisans and small business owners. Participants will include 20 children, from ages 7 to 13, from low-income households; camp counselors will consist of eight older at-risk youth between ages 18 and 24. Campers will help rehabilitate the campground and be exposed to cooking, construction, photography, arts and crafts, and other skills during the first week. The second week will focus on piloting entrepreneurial skills.Silver Water Retreat, founded in 1994, offers a camp-like setting where young people and adults can learn in a safe, natural and nurturing environment.
