About this grant
The Southern Africa Trust is a grantmaker that was established in 2005 to promote community involvement in policy dialogues. It makes grants to organizations that work to alleviate poverty through policy reform. The Chair in African Philanthropy, a project of the Southern Africa Trust, was set up to promote philanthropic knowledge and practice on the African continent. Through the Chair in African Philanthropy, the grantee aims to promote a narrative on African philanthropy that embraces traditional practices of giving. Efforts to document African practices of giving have so far been sporadic and disconnected. Where such knowledge is produced, it often does not form part of academic literature. The Chair in African Philanthropy at the University of the Witwatersrand will generate knowledge and allow for dialogue that enriches practice. This grant will enable the Chair in African Philanthropy to develop an academic and research framework and to set up governance and management structures.
