About this grant

The Southern Organizing Cooperative was established in 1997 when 14 community organizations from eight states in the Deep South joined together to improve the theory, practice and infrastructure of community organizing in the region. In 2001, the cooperative became a separate organization as membership had increased and members decided to create a new intermediary.Multiyear funding will support activities that include sponsoring advanced training and on-site exchange visits for leaders of organizations; providing technical assistance to projects related to jobs, wages and community development; encouraging joint organizing efforts; conducting annual meetings in each member state; organizing a conference to create a forum for networking and collaboration; and updating the Southern Social Justice Directory.Recent accomplishments included providing technical assistance to member organizations in the areas of technology and issue analysis; developing a program to regularly convene organizers and leaders across state boundaries; building research relationships with the historically black colleges and universities and with Highlander Research Center; and convening meetings between members and leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus.
