About this grant

The mission of the program is to build the asset development capacity of community-based alternative funds and federations in the poorest areas of the rural South. Its goal is to impart a working knowledge of the field of philanthropy and expose community-based funds to practices that will result in improved fundraising, marketing and organizational development.Multiyear funding will support activities that include conducting a needs assessment to identify the learning objectives for each participating member in the community-based philanthropy sector; developing a learning curriculum based on the needs assessment; organizing participants into learning clusters that will meet regularly; providing participants with information services that focus on philanthropy and the work of the studies network; and coordinating onsite visits by experienced coaches and mentors to member organizations.Accomplishments during the past two years included organizing three intensive weekend workshops related to asset development issues; developing a 14-part resource manual; distributing new educational materials via the Internet; conducting board training for four organizations; and completing an evaluation of the program.
