About this grant

The Steve Biko Foundation was founded in 1998 in memory of the late Bantu Stephen Biko, the founder of the black consciousness movement in South Africa who was murdered by the apartheid security police in 1997. The foundation works mainly with youth on issues of identity, diversity and reconciliation.Multiyear funding will enable the foundation to continue its focus on young South Africans by providing a vehicle for their voices and concerns on issues of racial and ethnic identity; their role in building South Africa’s democracy; and the threat that HIV/AIDS poses to the country’s collective existence. Activities will include hosting an annual youth leadership conference in the Eastern Cape; strengthening the foundation’s presence in the Eastern Cape; hosting the annual Steve Biko memorial lecture; organizing the Expressions of Identity program, which brings youth together from across the country to discuss relevant issues; and building and expanding the Heritage Centre to serve as a resource for the youth and broader community.Recent accomplishments included building an extensive network of youth groups; establishing a regional office in the Eastern Cape; and starting the Heritage Centre in Ginsburg, Biko’s birthplace.
