About this grant

The program goal is to strengthen the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms in Ukraine. Through its network of 29 member organizations, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union will work to raise public awareness of human rights through a range of monitoring, information, advocacy, and educational activities, including an annual human rights documentary film festival. It will continue a program of strategic litigation highlighting critical instances of rights abuse and oversee the work of a growing network of local public reception offices offering primary legal assistance to the community. In 2014-2016, the grantee provided over 37,000 consultations through its legal advice centers, which grew from 17 to 29. Through its analytical work, it contributed to the development of a National Strategy for Human Rights in Ukraine and subsequent National Action Plan for its implementation. Established in 2004, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union works to promote practical observance of the range of international human rights instruments to which Ukraine is a party.
