About this grant

There has not been a solid compilation of the history of philanthropy since the publication of Robert Bremner’s "American Philanthropy" in 1960. Professor Olivier Zunz, of the University of Virginia, has proposed writing a book to outline the various components of philanthropy and integrate the history of philanthropy into U.S. history. Multiyear funding will support research and the draft of a book to examine how various segments of philanthropy were formed and how they combine into vital relationships with civil society and the government. The book will explore three different phases of philanthropy: 1890s-1930s, 1930s-1960s, and 1960s-present.The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. Zunz is a professor in the university’s Department of History.
