About this grant

The Women’s Hope, Education and Training (WHEAT) Trust was established with a two-fold mission: to encourage a culture of giving in South Africa, targeting individual contributions; and to support local grassroots women’s organizations that develop women’s leadership abilities and improve the quality of life for women.Multiyear funding will support objectives that include hiring a full-time director and project officer; developing strong internal grantmaking systems to increase the volume of annual grants; clarifying program criteria and grantmaking objectives; building grantmaking experience; publicizing WHEAT’s work; and expanding fundraising to Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal as well as the Western Cape.Accomplishments during the past three years included awarding 40 grants totaling $6,000 for training and development for women; building an endowment; holding semi-annual events to highlight the work of grant recipients; producing communication tools; developing a medial profile in the Western Cape; creating a women’s network to raise funds; and attending two meetings of the International Network of Independent Women’s Funds.
