About this grant

The Women’s Institute for Leadership Development & Democracy was founded in 1993 to improve grassroots women’s understanding of development, democracy and self-development to ensure effective participation of women in government. The institute’s mission is to change strategic societal institutions to help women take their rightful place in the society.Multiyear funding will provide continued support to the core programs of the institute, which include strengthening women’s participation in government; assisting women in creating business plans to receive state funding; providing education about and advocating for the prevention of abuse of women and children; organizing training courses; documenting the history of the institute; and developing a strategic planning and organizational development process.During the past two years, accomplishments included designing and facilitating programs in democracy and life skills to enhance good citizenship; providing training and encouraging women to assume elected positions in national, provincial and local governments; establishing study circles to help women launch income generating projects and access funding; and interacting with youth and engaging them in discussions on substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.
