About this grant

In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) adopted a global plan of action for sustainable development. A major commitment made by governments at the summit was to promote transparent, inclusive and accountable decisionmaking related to the environment. This commitment has become even more significant as the process of globalization has grown throughout the past decade.Funding will support efforts to prepare for the World Summit on Sustainable Development that will be held in August 2002. The World Resources Institute (WRI) will focus on strengthening the capacity of public interest groups to undertake national-level implementation of common access standards; raising the awareness and commitment of governments to develop national systems to promote access information and participation; and supporting national efforts to improve access policies and practices by providing information and tools to track progress over timeThe WRI, founded in 1982, provides information, ideas and solutions to global environmental problems. Its mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect the environment for current and future generations.
