About this grant

The licenses to operate five hydropower projects in Alabama’s Mobile Bay basin are up for renewal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Southeastern Rivers and Streams Program will add significant capacity to the array of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) participating in the ongoing relicensing processes in the basin. Multiyear funding will enable WWF to focus its efforts on relicensings that affect high-priority aquatic sites identified through its recent strategic planning process. WWF will work to ensure that issues important to the survival of aquatic species are adequately addressed during the relicensing processes. Activities will include increasing public awareness of, and concern for, the biological diversity of the basin; working with public, private and NGO partners to develop and promote common goals for dam management; coordinating with other state organizations to promote conservation through the FERC relicensing process; developing relationships with dam owners to encourage adoption of innovative dam management parameters; and participating in all phases of the ongoing relicensing processes in the Mobile Bay basin.WWF, founded in 1961, is dedicated to protecting endangered spaces, saving endangered species and addressing global threats.
