Over the past decade, China has provided sizable amounts of development finance. Many of these projects have caused negative impacts, which has led to public opposition in host countries to further Chinese investments. China’s focus on creating energy, transport, and communication infrastructure linkages from Asia to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa through its Belt and Road Initiative is ambitious and has the potential for either large-scale negative or positive environmental and social impacts. Over the last grant period, World Wildlife Fund in the U.S. and China have worked with civil society partners globally to develop a coordinated approach to encourage financing for a clean energy transition throughout developing Asia. Over the next two years, the grantee will focus on improving effectiveness of China’s risk management framework, increasing dialogue with Chinese development finance institutions, and strengthening the grantee’s capacity to work more collaboratively with other Chinese organizations.
