About this grant

The YWCA of Greater Flint has worked toward eliminating racism and empowering women in the greater Flint community for over 40 years. In 2009, the organization provided emergency shelter and temporary housing to 302 women and 236 children escaping abuse; provided 635 individuals with counseling, legal advocacy, and supportive services; and offered prevention education to 2,165 students and community members. The grantee also offers 24-hour emergency response support to sexual assault survivors and, in fall 2010, will begin to provide transitional housing for young women (ages 18-20) who have aged out of the foster care system. To help ensure long-term sustainability and uninterrupted emergency shelter and transitional housing services, this grant will enable the YWCA of Greater Flint to make much-needed repairs and improvements to the facility’s boiler and chiller systems.
