Housing and Blight Elimination

We support the revitalization of the Flint community with an abundance of affordable and quality housing.

Why it Matters

We believe the sustainability of Flint neighborhoods and the downtown area will improve through the creation of more safe, affordable and attractive housing options.

The quality of life for residents improves when neighborhoods have an abundance of good, safe, affordable housing options for both homeowners and renters in areas that are free from blight.

Individuals and families who own homes reap numerous benefits, including wealth creation and enhanced family stability. And the community as a whole is strengthened when the benefits of home ownership are more attainable for all residents.

Our Approach

The Foundation supports nonprofits and community organizations bringing new housing units to Flint. We work to ensure neighborhoods are free from abandoned houses and other blight — and near active, vibrant and safe commercial corridors. Our efforts also ensure rental housing remains a viable option for many in Flint, with active inspections and code enforcement to improve the safety of those living in the units and the neighborhood as a whole.

We have three strategies to achieve our goals.

Revitalizing neighborhoods in the city of Flint and developing sustainable solutions for preventing blight.

Our grant funding supports:

  • The demolition of a significant number of publicly owned blighted structures, with an emphasis on efforts that leverage state and federal funds for demolition.
  • The rehabilitation and stabilization of existing housing through home ownership programs.
  • Increased capacity at the city of Flint and at organizations that do rental inspections to ensure properties are being inspected and repaired as required.

Enhancing the development of downtown Flint to attract residents, patrons and visitors.

Our grant funding supports:

  • An additional 1,000 units of mixed-income and/or mixed-use housing.
  • Organizations that increase usage of downtown properties and public spaces through gatherings and events that promote inclusion and community.

Providing funding for business and residential development in a strategic Flint area.

Our grant funding will support:

  • Concentrated, coordinated and diversified capital improvements and programmatic supports in a strategic area.
  • Increased homeownership rates in that area through new housing and down payment assistance programs.
  • Increased business activity and stability in the strategic area through business and residential developments.
