About this grant

This grant will assist Namati in their efforts to cultivate a strong global movement for legal empowerment. The grantee will work to strengthen the renamed Grassroots Justice Network which now brings together representatives from over 4,100 organizations. The grantee will aim to establish the Grassroots Justice Academy as the leading learning vehicle for legal empowerment. The grantee will also continue country-level programs in specific countries tentatively identified as Kenya, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, India, Mozambique and within the U.S. Particular attention will be given to issues of land, the environment and climate justice. In 2023-24, the grantee and its community paralegal partners directly helped over 360,000 people benefit from legal practices and protections. Outcomes included: 1) improved procedures for securing identification documents in Kenya; 2) transparent environmental health information for property buyers in Maryland; and 3) strengthened health privacy protections in Mozambique. Established in 2011, Namati works to build a global movement of grassroots legal advocates who give people the power to understand, use and shape the law.
