About this grant

The project goal is to support a healthy policy environment for the nonprofit and philanthropy sector. The Regulation of Nonprofits and Philanthropy project at the Urban Institute is a vehicle to develop, promote and disseminate research on the federal-state regulatory framework and its impact on nonprofits. The project also serves as a platform for ongoing dialogue about ways to improve the regulatory framework. The project engages: 1) attorney generals and other state officials; 2) federal regulators; 3) academics; 4) researchers; and 5) nonprofit practitioners. In the past two years, the grantee produced research and analysis on state and federal regulatory issues affecting the charitable sector, hosted a symposium and publicized research papers and briefs. Over the next two years, the grantee will continue to conduct research and distribute the results through publications and presentations, as well as update and expand the Legal Compendium — a unique tool for nonprofit regulatory analysis. The project is implemented by the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute — a think tank that builds knowledge about the nation’s social and fiscal challenges.
